Packing yourself saves money and gives you full control over what goes in which box. The price is time: for an average apartment it is days of work, and not everyone has them.

A packing crew arrives with materials, packs quickly and methodically, labels the boxes and sometimes unpacks at the other end. It adds to the cost of the move — but saves days and lowers the risk for fragile items.

There is a middle way too: pack most of the apartment yourself and leave the kitchen, fragile dishes and electronics to the crew.

What you need to pack yourself

• Boxes in at least two sizes — small for books and dishes, large for clothes and bedding.
• Packing paper, bubble wrap and wide tape.
• A thick marker.
• Small bags for the screws of dismantled furniture — taped to the furniture itself.

Tips that prevent damage

• Heavy things in small boxes, light things in large ones — a large box full of books will not close or lift.
• Plates stand on their edge, each wrapped individually, not stacked flat.
• No empty space in a box: fill it with paper or clothes so nothing shifts.
• Label every box with room and contents, and "fragile" on the side, not only the top.
• One "open first" box with everything you need for the first night.
