Piano moving

A piano is one of the heaviest and most delicate things in a home: too heavy for a normal carry and too delicate to treat like furniture. That is why movers price it separately — and why it pays to describe it precisely.

Why it is not a regular move

An upright piano typically weighs two to three hundred kilograms, and a grand more than that. Most of the weight sits in the internal frame, so it does not behave like furniture: it must not be tipped sharply or dragged by its legs, and it needs dedicated equipment — a dolly, straps and padding — and a crew that has done it before.

What the mover needs to know up front

  • Type of instrument: upright, grand or digital.
  • Floor and elevator at both ends, and stairwell width.
  • Distance from the truck to the door, and any steps at the building entrance.
  • Whether it fits through the doors and hallway to the room where it will stand.

A photo of the piano and of the stairwell is worth more than any description.

When a crane is needed

When the stairwell is too narrow or winding for a safe carry, or on high floors without an elevator that fits the piano. In those cases lifting from outside is safer — for the piano and for the movers. See also moving with a crane.

After the move

Changes in temperature and humidity during the move affect the tuning. It is usual to let the piano settle into the new room for a few weeks before calling a tuner.

How to book on MoveIL

In the moving request, tick "piano moving", add photos and give the floors and elevator. Tick crane as well if needed. You can book the piano on its own or as part of a full apartment move.

Frequently asked questions

Can the piano move together with the rest of the apartment?

Yes, and it usually works out better. Just mark the piano in the request so the movers bring the right equipment and crew.

Does a digital piano need special moving?

Usually not — it is far lighter and is handled like a delicate appliance. It is still worth adding it to the item list.

Will the mover tune the piano?

No. Tuning is done by a piano tuner, and it is best to wait a few weeks after the move.
